Members of the public were asked to vote on 10 of the greatest achievements in science, engineering and technology, selected by the museum’s curators. Nearly 50,000 votes were cast by visitors to the museum’s London galleries and online via its website. (via X-ray voted most important modern discovery - Telegraph)
The poll, one of the events marking the museum’s centenary year, singled out the X-ray machine as the scientific advance with the greatest impact.
Penicillin came second, followed by the DNA double helix, the Apollo 10 capsule, the V2 rocket engine, Stephenson’s Rocket, the Pilot ACE - one of the first computers, the steam engine, the Model T Ford motor car, and the electric telegraph.
